TRAINING TIP TUESDAY:

(Where I post dog training related tips and information and open the wall for your questions and comments! Featured the last Tuesday of each month)

Teaching a dog the concept of "Saying Please" is a great exercise in obedience and also a helpful practice for earning and maintaining a dog's respect. Saying please simply involves having the puppy perform a simple command (usually Sit or Down), before being given anything desired. “Saying please” can be used for anything good or wanted by the pup. It is basically taking a moment to make the puppy “pause” its potentially excitable/anticipatory trajectory and stop, obey, and refocus on you. You can have your dog do a command when it waits at a doorway to go outside o

r for food before a meal. You can have her do it when you put on her leash, get ready to play fetch, or when you want to pet him (or he comes and “asks” to be petted). Just like in humans, basic good manners can go a long ways!
